There is no place in the United States that encompasses U.S. history quite like the nation’s capital, Washington D.C. A trip to D.C is both an educating and entertaining experience, particularly for young travelers. Take in the grandeur of the city’s neoclassical architecture and awe-inspiring monuments surrounded by cherry blossoms. Find inspiration from the obelisk shaped Washington Monument honoring George Washington, the 19 ft tall and 175 tons statue of Abraham Lincoln, the statues of Eleanor, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his dog Fala, and the 30 ft statue of Martin Luther King, Jr. Pace the dome shaped interior of the Jefferson Memorial containing the impressive bronze statue of the third U.S. president as you read passages of the Declaration of Independence on the wall. From here, you will see the peaceful shore of the Potomac River Tidal Basin. Visit the memorials honoring those who served and sacrificed for their country at the World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Marine Corps War Memorial. There are plenty of creative ways to have fun. Meet Tian Tian and Mei Xiang, giant pandas at the National Zoo. At the Eastern Market, you can snack on gourmet cheeses and crab cakes, visit arts and crafts booths, and attend free concerts. Tour the International Spy Museum, or check out interactive pieces of news and journalism at the Newseum. Although you typically have to sign up weeks in advance, a trip to the White House will allow you to tour 8 of the 132 rooms. You might even get to see the President! D.C. has many famous places to eat, like Ben’s Chili Bowl. What makes D.C. a prime location for tourism is also its proximity to NYC and Philadelphia. These cities are only a few hours’ drive from the capital, and inexpensive bus options make these trips possible for many who visit the capital. Less
